Florence Airport is situated just over 3.7 miles (or roughly 6 kilometers) northwest from the center of the city. This is too far to walk between the two destinations, but there are a number of transportation options available for making the journey from the airport to downtown or wherever else you are heading in the area.

You can select from renting a car, taking a bus, getting a taxi, or riding the tram. Some options will have very low costs but will have the longest travel times, whereas other selections will give you total privacy and avoid having to ride with strangers, but they will be more expensive.

Renting a car

Many major rental car companies have kiosks as Florence Airport, and this option gives you complete privacy with your trip to the city, as it will only be you and your fellow travelers in the vehicle. This also means you can make stops along the way and enjoy this independence throughout your vacation, with the knowledge that your luggage is safely secured in the trunk of the vehicle.

But this is by far the most expensive choice and will cost at least a few hundred Euros, with the precise charge depending on the type of car you pick and how long you need it. Remember also that you will have to refuel the vehicle while you have it, which is another expense, and it’s also advised to pay for insurance to cover any bills you may have if you get into an accident with the vehicle.

It will take you about 15 minutes to get from the airport to Florence, although the journey may be longer when there’s more traffic, like rush hour, or quicker at quieter times, like driving late at night.

Taking a bus

For visitors traveling on a limited budget, getting a bus from the airport to Florence can be a good choice because the fare can be as low as €4, depending on where you are traveling. The exact price of the journey will be based on whichever bus station you are heading to as your final stop. Because of the stops involved, this ride might take at least 30 minutes or longer to get to your destination.

The bus companies Lazzi-Cap and Sita/ATAF operate buses from the airport, so you should take time before your flight to look up the routes that they offer, and see if one of them has a stop that is within walking distance of your hotel or other accommodation. Just remember that buses drop off at stops and not to the exact destination you’re heading, so this transportation option might not be the best option if you are traveling with lots of luggage or have companions with mobility problems.

You will also need to share the bus with other travelers, so beware that space for your suitcases might be limited, and the buses can also be crowded based on what time of day you are traveling. If you have a large group and/or lots of bags, you may want to consider a taxi or renting a car.

Getting a taxi

The driving time from the airport to the city should be about 15 minutes but the exact length will depend on how much traffic there is. If you’re going to the center of Florence then there is a fixed rate fare of €28 every weekday, increasing to €30 on holidays and weekends, and up to €32 after 10pm. You will also be asked to pay a fee of €1 for every suitcase that you’re traveling with.

Getting a taxi is one way to enjoy privacy because you’ll only have to share the car with the driver, but this will be a more expensive option compared to using public transportation. Only ever use the officially licensed taxis when getting picked up at the airport, and you can find these by asking an airport representative for assistance or following the signs in the airport to the taxi pickup area.

As an alternative to the official airport taxis, the ridesharing service Uber also operates at Florence Airport. If you have an Uber account, once your flight has arrived just enter your destination in the app and you can see whether the estimated fare will be cheaper than taking a taxi. If you decide to ride with Uber, the app will give you directions on where to meet your driver at the airport.

Riding the tram

The most recent transportation option added to Florence Airport is the tram service operated by the company GEST, which connects the airport with downtown. The journey usually takes about 20 minutes and provides a direct link to the city without the need for making any transfers.

You are able to get the tram from the airport every Monday to Thursday between 5am and 30 minutes after midnight, every Friday to Saturday from 5am to 2am, and every Sunday and on holidays from 5am to 30 minutes after midnight. A single ticket costs €1.70, making this a very affordable option, although space for luggage and seats might be limited if you’re traveling at busy times.
